Monitoring drug- Resistant Malaria through Intensified Case Finding at the Village Level in Cambodia

File Type .pdf | File Size 1.47 MB

During the past decade Cambodia has made significant strides toward malaria reduction and now, elimination. The last remaining cases will be the hardest to reach, as they are located in remote border areas. Efforts are also threatened by the emergence of artemisinin-resistant malaria (ARM). Emergence of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum was officially confirmed in western Cambodia in 2007-2008. Development of drug resistance is spurred by lack of adherence to the full course of treatment, poor quality services which result in inappropriate or inadequate treatment, self-medication, and the use of counterfeit and substandard drugs.
