URC takes a systemic approach to fistula prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation for women and girls. This graph shows the framework we use to improve obstetric fistula outcomes. Our conceptual approach strengthens fistula programming through four major elements:

  • Country-led approaches to strengthen systems and institutionalize fistula prevention, detection, treatment and reintegration;
  • Quality improvement with the establishment of standards and measurement processes within a fistula prevention and care continuu;
  • Advocacy and policy at global, regional, and national levels to prioritize a comprehensive maternal health package that include fistula prevention and care; and
  • Sustainability through engagement of multisectoral partners and stakeholders.
