File Type .pdf | File Size 496.47 KB

This brief highlights the cost of implementing Kangaroo Mother Care (KMC) in a referral hospital in Nicaragua, including training, implementation and ongoing operating costs. After receiving clinical training in KMC, the implementation team trained colleagues, wrote guidelines for clinicians and educational materials for parents, and supported adherence to the new guidelines. The study compared data on infant weight, medication and formula consumption, incubator use, and hospitalization for six months before and after implementation. Conclusion: Treating premature and low birthweight infants in Nicaragua with KMC saves money within a short period of time. Implementation in more facilities is strongly recommended.
