The USAID-funded TRAction Project awarded funding in February 2011 to the Averting Maternal Death and Disability (AMDD) Program at Columbia University to conduct research on disrespectful and abusive care of women during facility-based childbirth in Tanzania. The research aims to describe the manifestations of disrespectful and abusive care in Tanzania, and develop an intervention to reduce the problem. This Fact Sheet provides a brief background of the issue and an overview of AMDD/Columbia's research.
