HIV and infant feeding counselling: Challenges faced by nurse-counsellors in northern Tanzania

This article in Human Resources for Health explores the concerns of nurses working as infant-feeding counselors to HIV-positive women in northern Tanzania. Discussions with 25 nurses at four sites revealed a high level of stress and frustration among respondents, who felt underqualified and concerned that they would undermine the authority traditionally accorded health care providers. The study concludes that local realities must be more seriously taken into account by organizations providing infant-feeding counseling.
