Supply Chain and Logistics Management Systems

For over 30 years, University Research Co. LLC (URC) has been supporting international public and private sector organizations in strengthening their supply chain and logistics management systems for drugs and medical supplies. In doing so, we have provided technical assistance to Ministries of Health, other government agencies, and local NGOs in countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Our technical assistance in supply chain/ logistics management is typically channeled through donor-funded health, family planning, and nutrition projects to in-country recipients. We work with donors, including the US Agency for International Development (USAID), the President’s Emergency Fund for AIDS Relief, the Global Fund, the United Nations Population Fund, the United Nations Development Programme, and the World Health Organization to coordinate local and international resources to build local capacity to manage responsive, efficient, and effective supply chain and logistics management systems.

Our assistance has helped:

  • Improve the forecasting of drugs, contraceptives, and medical supplies;
  • Improve coordination with procurement agents, pharmaceuticals, manufacturers, and donor organizations;
  • Enhance the transparency and cost-effectiveness of the procurement, shipment, and delivery of commodities;
  • Develop local capacity to manage supplies from their arrival in the country (including customs clearance), to warehousing and distribution, and to delivery to patients;
  • Standardize logistics management processes;
  • Enhance the use of logistics data for planning and budgeting purposes;
  • Institutionalize logistics management best practices (e.g., implementation of bi-annual, nationwide inventories of supplies); and
  • Leverage local and international stakeholders to obtain best prices.
